The Philadelphia AIDS Consortium and World Health Care Infrastructures is launching its 8 year of only one of two national direct AmeriCorps programs with focus on targeting those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS to work in direct community service to their communities.
Access To Care through Service (ACTS) is a proven empowerment program for those most underrepresented and disenfranchised citizens particularly among women and children in communities of color.
ACTS has 49 members of which 30 will be inducted tomorrow. The eleven (11) community base sites include: ASIAC, Congreso de Latinos, MANNA, Philadelphia Fight, Turning The Tide, Beautiful Gate Outreach in Delaware, Community Food Bank of Southern New Jersey, Community Baptist Church, Positive Effects and Intercultural Family Services. TPAC/WHCI parent organization is proud to welcome such a dedicate group of faith base, health and social service providers.
Mr. Yoshiaki Yamasaki, Program Director said, "It is indeed a great honor and privilege to embrace a new family of ACTS community service volunteers. For the past seven (7) years over 343 ACTS members have served directly in those communities most heavily impacted with HIV/AIDS to educate, prevent and help gain access to those infected by this virus."
President of the Board of Directors, Mr. Luciano Orsini, emphasized the unique nature of ACTS as a prototype of tapping into the ethic of national and community service to meet the unique and challenging needs of those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. He reminded all what Dr. Martin Luther King said over 30 years ago, "Everyone can be great because everyone can serve."
In past years dignitaries ranging from President Bill Clinton to Governor Edward Rendell to Lieutenant Governor Catherine Baker Knoll have inaugurated new ACTS members. Tomorrow, the common expectation and common experience of community service will be witnessed by those ACTS members sworn into active service.
