USciences Board of Trustees Elects Marvin Samson Chairman and Richard R. Howard Vice Chairman

Outgoing Chair Delbert S. Payne Given Emeritus Status

PHILADELPHIA, May 12, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The University of the Sciences Board of Trustees today elected Marvin Samson, CEO of Samson Medical Technologies, chairman and Richard R. Howard, CEO of Advanced Pharmacy Services, vice chairman. The election follows the recent retirement announcement by outgoing chair Dr. Delbert S. Payne, who was subsequently elected emeritus trustee at the board meeting.

A world-renowned leader in injectable manufacturing and delivery systems, Samson has served on the University's board in numerous capacities since 1991, including vice chair since 2000. He is founder and chief executive officer of Samson Medical Technologies, LLC, a company specializing in injectable drug delivery systems and programs for hospital and alternate site pharmacists.

A native of Philadelphia, Samson received his BS in chemistry from Temple University. In 2007, he joined Qualitest Pharmaceuticals, Inc. as chairman of the board and chief executive officer, where he remained until the purchase of Qualitest by Endo Pharmaceuticals at the end of 2010. He is currently serving as a consultant to Endo Pharmaceuticals. In addition, Samson is a member of the board of directors of Baxa Corporation, Flynn Pharma, Emcure Pharmaceuticals Limited, and Dobfar Holdings S.p.A. Over the years, his gifts to USciences have supported the Marvin Samson Center for the History of Pharmacy Museum and the Misher Visiting Professorship in the Humanities. In addition, he chaired the University's most recent capital campaign. In recognition for his commitment to the University's mission, the Samson College of Health Sciences was named after him in November 2009.

Howard's business career includes 12 years in commercial banking and 19 years in healthcare management. Howard served on the USciences board of trustees from 1995 to 2004 and rejoined the board in 2007, where he has been a member of the Finance and Audit Committee and Executive Committee. Since 2009, Howard has served as CEO and investor at Advanced Pharmacy Services, Inc., in Houston, Texas. A private equity financed institutional pharmacy services company, Advanced Pharmacy Services provides prescription medications to skilled nursing centers. A graduate of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1971 with a degree in corporate finance, Howard began his career at Fidelity Bank where he was a vice president. He went on to tenures at Health Group Care Centers, Inc., Equibank, Genesis Health Ventures, Inc., and Flagship Global Health, Inc.

Payne announced on April 29 that he would retire from the board in May 2011. The University's 190th Commencement on May 25 will be his last official act. Payne has served on the USciences board since 1990 and as chair since 2000. In honor of his dedication, the board elected Payne an emeritus trustee.
