"URAC's 2009 Quality Summit will highlight ways in which managed care professionals can enhance value for consumers from overseeing or implementing comprehensive health plans and administering pharmacy benefits to developing innovative programs to keep consumers healthy," said Alan P. Spielman, president and CEO of URAC. "With the introduction of our new 'Health Care Stars!' awards, we will recognize individual excellence. Participants will be able to share ideas, insights and strategies designed to raise the bar on quality and meet the needs of the customers they serve."

In addition to the keynote speakers, attendees will be able to hear from leading experts including Health Management Corporation, American Specialty Health, Nevada Department of Business and Industry Division of Insurance and the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission Division of Insurance. Topics scheduled for the Summit include Promoting Accreditation with Health Policy Makers and Government Purchasers, and Health Policy Initiatives Impact on the Health Care Landscape. Many of the concurrent sessions at the Summit will feature presentations on innovative and emerging practices from recipients of the 2009 Honorable Mention Awards in the Best Practices in Consumer Empowerment and Protection Awards Program, including TriWest Healthcare Alliance, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma, Lifeworks, Vital Decisions, LLC, and SNAPforSeniors, Inc. A new feature to the Summit this year is the "Health Care Stars!" Awards Program to honor those health care professionals who directly impact the lives of consumers they serve. URAC solicited nominations for exceptional people who have shown fortitude and leadership and constantly risen above their daily duties to improve people's lives by protecting and empowering consumers in their health care choices and services.

"Those who choose to work in health care and have a rare dedication to improving the lives of others deserve this recognition for the great work they're doing to protect and empower health care consumers," said John DuMoulin, Vice President of Product Development, Government Relations and Education for URAC . "Even as health care in this country faces major reforms, URAC wants to recognize those who show an exceptional commitment to what will remain the most important aspect of any health care policy -- providing quality care to consumers."

Approximately 400 key decision makers are expected to attend the Summit this year. This includes executive leadership, medical directors, professionals in utilization, case and disease management, health information and decision support specialists, consultants, and compliance and regulatory staff from organizations in the health care community including health plans, health management companies and pharmacy management companies.
