KANSAS CITY, Mo., June 4, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Tutera Senior Living & Health Care, one of the nation's premier providers of diversified, post-acute senior health care services, announces the promotion of Anthony "Tony" Burgess, MD, to Chief Medical Officer. In his new role, Dr. Burgess will lead Tutera's clinical teams to oversee policy, training and protocols to ensure the highest quality continuum of care for residents.

Previously, Dr. Burgess served as Corporate Medical Director overseeing Tutera's community-based medical directors at the 47 communities in 13 states currently operated by Tutera. Prior to joining the Tutera staff, Dr. Burgess served Tutera residents as a consulting Physiatrist.

"Dr. Burgess brings a rare combination of medical expertise, genuine compassion and a collaborative approach that will be instrumental in guiding Tutera's mission forward," said Randy Bloom, Ph.D., president and chief operating officer for Tutera Senior Living & Health Care. "We're fortunate to benefit from his balanced vision and leadership to ensure the highest levels of quality care and operational efficiency while keeping a persistent focus on innovation."

Dr. Burgess brings unique experience and perspective to his new role – as both a doctor and as a patient. After earning three undergraduate degrees in Biology, Chemistry and Psychology at Baylor University, he attended St. Matthews University School of Medicine and completed his clinical training at the respected Cleveland Clinic. While in medical school, Dr. Burgess also earned a Master's in Healthcare Administration. He then completed his residency at the prestigious Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital, part of Northwestern Medicine in Chicago, IL.

Before pursuing his medical career, Dr. Burgess worked with his father as a welder for 14 years in the construction industry. Following a traumatic workplace accident, Dr. Burgess endured multiple surgeries and six months of intensive rehabilitation. The challenges of recovery reignited his childhood dream to pursue medicine.

"Beyond my training as a physician, my personal experiences have helped me personally connect with Tutera residents. I share my story frequently to support and encourage them on the challenging road to recovery," said Dr. Burgess. "I feel like every resident is a member of my own family. And I know it's my responsibility to make sure they feel supported in every facet of their care."

Dr. Burgess was recently nominated president of the Kansas Chapter of the American Medical Directors Association (AMDA). He currently serves as a member of the Leadership, Membership and Innovations Committee for AMDA – The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine, where he was asked to help introduce legislation to address the opioid crisis. In fact, Dr. Burgess recently attended an Opioid Summit in St. Louis, MO where he proposed more resources and greater reimbursement for providers who care for patients with opioid use disorder. He was also invited by the Kansas Board of Governors to participate in an Opioid Task Force to combat the opioid epidemic representing the skilled nursing and long-term care factions.

In addition, Dr. Burgess was invited by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to participate in an initiative called Patients Over Paperwork. The initiative directs federal agencies to cut red tape and remove regulatory obstacles that get in the way of health care providers spending quality time with patients. Dr. Burgess will drive recommendations from the post-acute and long-term care perspective.

Dr. Burgess is also a part of a select group invited by Point Click Care (PCC) — the largest provider of cloud-based EHR platforms for post-acute and long-term care — to collaborate with PCC designers and architects on new applications and functionality for practitioner engagement to enable person-centered care.

"Tutera has always been a company that truly cares about its residents, their families and our associates. In this critical role as Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Burgess will take this guiding principal to a new level with his sincere empathy and tireless dedication," said Joe Tutera, president and CEO of Tutera.
