Local events at Y communities kick off the summer by encouraging kids to get up, get out and grow

CHICAGO, April 12, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Y announced today that the celebration of the 26th annual YMCA's Healthy Kids Day® will be held Saturday, April 29. Healthy Kids Day is the Y's national initiative to improve the health and well-being of kids and families. YMCAs across the country are holding free community events aimed to inspire kids to keep their minds and bodies active throughout the summer months. The day-long events will feature activities that range from hula dancing, and rock climbing to cooking demonstrations, reading and exploration. Each location will curate a wide array of fun and exciting activities for their communities that are designed to charge kids up to get active while simultaneously teaching families how to develop healthy routines at home.

Healthy Kids Day is celebrated at over 1,600 Ys across the country by over 1.2 million participants in an effort to bring the community together and keep kids active. When a child is healthy, happy, motivated and excited, amazing things are bound to happen. Conversely, research shows that without physical and learning activities—normally provided in-school—kids are at high risk for summer learning loss and gain weight three times faster during the summer than during the school year. As spring turns to summer, Healthy Kids Day is a powerful reminder not to let children idle away their summer days. Instead, the Y wants to focus on charging them up with enthusiasm for themselves and their potential, to make this the best summer ever by keeping kids active and learning.

"At the Y, we believe there are no days off for a child's developing mind and body," said Kevin Washington, President and CEO of YMCA of the USA. "Healthy Kids Day is a great opportunity for YMCAs to educate families and kids about the importance of staying physically and intellectually active over the summer, and to provide helpful guidance and resources."

YMCAs across the country will offer specific activities and learning experiences for not just kids but families as well, both on Healthy Kid's Day, April 29, and during the week leading up to the day's events.
