HOUSTON, Feb. 4, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- At a grand finale to be held on Friday, Feb. 28, the Texas Gulf Coast Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) will announce the name of the 2020 Student of the Year.
Year after year, high school students take on the challenge to raise the most funds to find cures and ensure access to treatment for blood cancer patients, and though only one can win the title, each participant is focused on the fact that everyone wins when cancer loses. This year, a record-breaking number of candidates signed on to participate, 30 candidates in total.
The Grand Finale marks the finish of a seven week fundraising competition that launched on Wednesday, Jan. 8. Local winners will go on to compete for the national title, which will be announced later in the summer. The local 2019 Student of the Year winner, placed third in the country last summer, raising over $197,000, in just seven weeks.
This year's class of candidates has set a goal of raising $850,000 and a personal mission of not only raising funds to help create a world without blood cancers, but also raising awareness for LLS's goal to cure blood cancers and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
This year's fundraising is in honor of a patient heroes, 2020 Honored Hero: Jacob Munoz from Klein Cain High School.
