The Emergency Center, a premier freestanding emergency room, is offering Free Heart Screenings in February to help patients know their risk for cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease is known as a silent killer, and is the leading cause of death for both men and women, representing 1 of every 3 deaths in the United States.

FORT WORTH, ARLINGTON, and SAN ANTONIO, Texas, Jan. 31, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- According to the American Heart Association, screening tests for coronary artery disease should begin at age 20. "Knowing your risk is a first step in managing your risk. Finding out your blood pressure and cholesterol levels can help show you where you are on the spectrum. Do yourself and your family a favor by being proactive in protecting your heart." – Dr. Eric Wilke

The Heart Check will include: – Pulse and Blood Pressure – EKG – Fasting Lipid Profile – Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk Calculator

During the screening, a physician will obtain a full set of vitals, an EKG, a complete lipid panel (that includes total cholesterol, HDL and LDL), and conduct the American Heart Association Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk Calculator. To obtain accurate results with the lipid panel, the patient will need to be fasting for at least 10 hours (drinking water is ok). If a patient already knows their cholesterol results and does not want the lipid panel, they are advised to be sure to bring those results with them to the free screening.

The appointment will take about 15 minutes, and patients will need to schedule the time of their visit by calling one of The Emergency Center's three convenient locations. All patients will receive a copy of their test results. If the heart check indicates a greater than low risk, the patient will be advised to follow up with their PCP or cardiologist.
