"EMDR is an innovative therapy that is both counterintuitive yet evidence-based," explained Casey Jordan, Chief Marketing Officer. "Our blog post summarizes recent research that shows promising results when EMDR is applied to persons who have suffered trauma, including trauma that may be intertwined with alcohol, drug, or other types of substance abuse (but not necessarily)."

AN INNOVATIVE PROGRAM TO TREAT TRAUMA AND PTSD

Here is background on this release. There is a growing crisis in Canada with respect to trauma and PTSD. Many of the persons struggling with trauma and PTSD are "first responders," but many others have suffered childhood or sexual trauma, or other forms of psychological trauma. Some, but not all, may turn to drugs or alcohol and thus need help with drug or alcohol dependency issues. All will benefit from evidence-based methodologies, and since all types of rehabilitation programs are decidedly not "one size fits all," a person who is suffering from drugs, alcohol, substance-dependency, trauma, and/or PTSD is well-advised to do some research and identify a program that is most likely to fit their personal needs and beliefs.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy treatment that has been proven effective for trauma therapy and anxiety. It originated in California when psychologist Dr. Francine Shapiro went for a walk in the woods and found her anxiety lessened after she had been moving her eyes back and observing her surroundings. This initial idea led her to try out methods with her clients who also felt better. Two years later in 1989, the first study was published on EMDR and research has continued since. Although Shapiro focused on EMDR's capacity to ease anxiety and PTSD, other therapists have used it for conditions like depression and addiction.

In summary, the new blog post is a quick summary for persons who may have heard about EMDR and might want to explore it as one option, among many, when considering programs to deal with trauma and PTSD. Above all, interested persons are urged to reach out to a trained professional for an initial assessment and possible therapy.
