MCLEAN, Va. and SAN DIEGO, Jan. 11 Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) (NYSE: SAI) today announced that former Acting U.S. Surgeon General, Steven Galson, M.D., M.P.H. has joined the company as Senior Vice President for Civilian Health Operations.

As part of SAIC's Health Solutions Business Unit, the Civilian Health Operation provides solutions to local, state, federal, and commercial health organizations to help prevent, prepare for, detect, and respond to public health threats. It also supports biomedical research and the advancement of life sciences in the healthcare market.

The operation has approximately 600 employees, with expertise in life sciences, health services, quantitative analysis, drug development, and commercial pharmaceutical regulatory compliance, as well as research and product development capabilities in areas such as cancer treatment, bio-threat analysis, and pre-clinical vaccines. The operation's work is primarily performed in Atlanta, Ga., and several locations in Maryland (Bethesda, Frederick, Fort Detrick, and Rockville).
In his new role, Galson will lead SAIC's civilian health team, manage the operation's long-term growth strategy, and help develop new solutions to meet the evolving business needs of SAIC's civilian, public health, and life sciences customers. Galson will report to Anthony Hess, Ph.D., SAIC senior vice president and business unit general manager.

Prior to joining SAIC, Galson was the Acting Surgeon General of the United States. He also served as the Acting Assistant Secretary of Health, and the Director of the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. Galson also held executive positions in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Energy, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
Galson is a graduate of the State University of New York at Stony Brook where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry. He later earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, and a Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. A retired rear admiral from the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, Galson is also board certified in general preventive medicine, public health, and occupational medicine.
