CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 04, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Sona Dermatology, in partnership with the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), will be offering free "SPOTme" skin checks for 2 days in May, as part of Skin Cancer Awareness Month.

The AAD recommends that everyone, not just those who are high risk, schedule an annual skin check with a board-certified dermatologist. According to the AAD:

  • Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, with nearly 9,500 people diagnosed daily.
  • More than 3 million Americans a year are affected by melanoma or nonmelanoma skin cancer, and on average, 1 American dies from melanoma every hour.
  • Risk factors include: skin that burns easily, blond or red hair, a history of excessive sun exposure, tanning bed use, and those with immune-suppressing diseases or treatments.
  • Caucasians and men over 50 have a higher risk of developing melanoma.
  • People with more than 50 moles, atypical moles, or large moles are also at an increased risk.
  • While people with skin of color have a lower risk of developing melanoma, the disease is often diagnosed at later stages, when more advanced and difficult to treat.
  • Melanoma is the second most common form of cancer in females ages 15-29.
When detected early however, both melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancers are highly treatable. The AAD recommends that everyone, not just those who are high risk, schedule an annual skin check with a board-certified dermatologist. According to Dr. Ronea Chambers, a board-certified dermatologist with Sona Dermatology at its Ballantyne location, all patients should receive an annual skin exam as a preventative, baseline measure of good health. While the frequency may change over time "depending on changes in moles, bleeding, non-healing skin lesions, [and] if you have had skin cancer, or if you have skin cancer in your family," everyone should be seen at least once a year.

Sona Dermatology understands the importance of these annual skin checks, and has partnered with the AAD to offer free SPOTme skin checks to patients in our community. The SPOTme skin checks will be offered through Sona Dermatology's board-certified dermatologists at its Ballantyne and Huntersville/Lake Norman locations in May. No payment or insurance is required, but patients do need to register in advance to ensure an appointment, which will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.

On Monday, May 6, the SPOTme skin checks will be offered at Sona Dermatology's Huntersville/Lake Norman location from 8:30 – 11:00am; and at Sona Dermatology's Ballantyne location from 1:00pm3:30pm.

The SPOTme skin checks will be offered again on Saturday, May 18, from 9:00am1:00pm, at Sona Dermatology's Huntersville/Lake Norman location only.
