/PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Women's concern in the wake of the July voluntary recall issued by pharmaceutical giant Allergan of its Biocell brand of textured implants is the subject of a September 24
article on CBS Miami. Beverly Hills
-based plastic surgeon Payam Jarrah-Nejad, M.D., F.I.C.S., F.A.C.S., aka Dr. J says that the Allergan recall has revived a number of issues, including a possible link between textured implants in general with BIA-ALCL, a highly treatable lymphoma associated with implants in rare instances.
Dr. J points out that his practice has never used textured implants for primary breast augmentation. "I'm sure that's a relief to my former breast augmentation patients, but for women who have a textured implant from Allergan or another manufacturer, they should be alert, but not overly worried," said the plastic surgeon. "Naturally, patients should see a doctor if any symptoms emerge. They should know, however, that explantation is a very safe and effective procedure that offers patients benefits beyond just dealing with the immediate problem," Dr. J said.
"Explantation is a procedure we've performed very many times, and the outcomes have been consistently outstanding," says Dr. J. "The good part is that patients have a number of options regarding what to do when the old implant has been removed. They can adjust the size of their implant if they realize that they would prefer something different.. They can also opt not to get a replacement implant at all," says Dr. J. "In those cases, breasts typically return to their natural size after their procedure. Recovery from the procedure is fast as well," says the plastic surgeon. "Patients are usually able to get back to their normal work routine just a few days after the operation."
"The most important thing for women with textured implants to know is that should any issues develop, there are very effective options that can resolve these issues quickly and very positively. My former explantation patients tell me now that they are feeling a lot more comfortable and relaxed," says Dr. J.
"For women who are considering a primary breast augmentation, my advice is to educate yourself about your options and, most of all, be careful in your selection of a surgeon. Prospective patients should only consider reputable, board-certified plastic surgeons and look for doctors who have built up a body of work they can look at as well as testimonials," says Dr. J.
