Expanded Center Will Ensure Better Efficiency and Increased Safety

PHOENIX, Oct. 18, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Phoenix Children's new 17,000-square-foot Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (CCBD) Outpatient Clinic and Infusion Center opened for patients on October 18, increasing the Hospital's capacity to care for children and adults fighting pediatric cancer and complex blood disorders.

The number of annual patient visits at Phoenix Children's CCBD has grown dramatically in recent years, from just 8,900 in 2007 to 22,420 in 2016. Likewise, the Center is averaging 40 bone marrow transplants per year and is expanding services rapidly. Understanding the need to expand its CCBD and provide care for children fighting life-threatening diseases, Phoenix Children's broke ground on the new Center in May 2016.

"When families are faced with a tough diagnosis such as cancer or a rare blood disorder, they deserve the very best care and support," said Cynthia Wetmore, MD, PhD, Director of the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders and Division Chief for Hematology/Oncology, Phoenix Children's. "The new Center will be a place that speaks of our promise to provide exceptional care to our patients who need it the most."

The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders Outpatient Clinic and Infusion Center will double the capacity of the old space with 15 private exam rooms, six blood-draw spaces and a beautiful activity space for patients. New infusion bays can alternate from being private rooms to conjoined spaces where patients can play and interact while receiving infusions. The thoughtful design of the new Center will improve the experience for patients who must spend long days receiving treatment at the Hospital.

Furthermore, the new preparation and recovery area will allow for procedures to be performed within the clinic space rather than transporting patients to the Operating Room. Families can rejoin their child while they recover from local or light general anesthesia. The new Center is now conveniently located on the 2nd floor in the Hospital's main tower, which will drastically increase efficiency. The new location, just an elevator ride from the Emergency Department, Imaging, and 7th floor cancer inpatient areas, means patients won't need to travel across the Hospital campus throughout the day; their needs will be accommodated in one space.

"CCBD staff will be more visible to families and closer to patients, with more time to provide tailored patient care. By streamlining services, the same staff will be able to treat more patients as they spend less time traveling back and forth across campus and work areas," added Dr. Wetmore.

The Center has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report's "Best Children's Hospitals" as one of the nation's top treatment centers for pediatric oncology and hematology.
