The event is part of 24 community adoption events PetSmart Charities is holding with its local animal rescue agency partners in cities across the United States and Canada throughout 2011. Last year, PetSmart Charities held 21 community adoption events that cumulatively saved the lives of 3,517 pets. "Our last several Midnight Woofness events have been so successful in adoptions, we have decided to keep setting the bar higher!" said Oklahoma Humane's President Christy Counts. "Midnight Woofness is a crucial component to meeting our no-kill goal. It not only increases the number of shelter pets leaving the shelter alive during a special event, but it increases the public's awareness of the variety and quality of pets available from our shelter."

An estimated 6 to 8 million dogs and cats enter animal shelters in the U.S. each year, but approximately 4 million never find homes. PetSmart Charities strives to bring attention to the availability of pets at shelters and rescue groups and to the benefits of pet adoption. Oklahoma City residents can help end pet homelessness for good by joining forces with these local organizations through People Saving Pets. The movement is a first-of-its-kind initiative that unites animal welfare organizations toward a common goal of helping people understand the issue and learn how they can take action in their community.

Proudly sponsored by Purina® Pro Plan® and Tidy Cats®, the Oklahoma City community adoption event will raise awareness for pets available to adopt in the local community and provide the Central Oklahoma Humane Society with a venue to showcase them. In every location where a community adoption event will be held, adoption agencies will also receive increased adoption rewards from PetSmart Charities for every pet adopted.

"Every homeless pet deserves the opportunity to find a forever, loving home," said Kevin Hill, shopper marketing manager, Nestle Purina PetCare Company. "Our goal in supporting the PetSmart Charities' community adoption events is to help improve the lives of homeless pets by providing them with super premium nutrition as well as other important pet care supplies. We hope by providing these essentials, these pets and new pet owners can now focus on other important matters like growing a bond for life."
