MONTCLAIR, N.J., July 30, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The popular Pharmacotherapy curriculum track at PAINWeek 2018 will feature new course offerings on topics of interest to the pain practitioner. In Are Bootleg Fentanyls the New Pill Mills?, offered on Saturday, September 8, senior faculty member Jeffrey Fudin, BS, PharmD, DAAPM, FCCP, FASHSHP, will lead a comprehensive discussion of illicit fentanyl derivatives, relative potencies, and dangers, so that participants can intelligently separate alternative facts from the real facts as they relate to opioid related deaths. Thug Drugs, to be presented on Friday, September 7, will examine similar substances on different sides of the legal boundaries, and explore what "street chemists" already know about illicit substances with similar, if not the same, mechanisms of action as legal prescription medications readily available today. Mark Garofoli, PharmD, MBA, BCGP, CPE, will lead the discussion. Also on Friday, ADFs: Gimmick or Godsend? will review the data on abuse deterrent formulations, of which more than a dozen are currently on the market. While ADFs purportedly meet the FDA demand for safer opioid medications, their expense is rarely supported by third-party insurance payers. In consequence, course presenter Michael Schatman, PhD, CPE, DASPE, observed, "The practitioner is faced with the FDA stating that ADF opioid medications should be considered, yet the patient's insurance often will not pay for new ADF medications, and there are no corresponding generic medications available."
PAINWeek 2018 will feature a diverse curriculum in the following course concentrations: acute pain management, advanced practice practitioners, behavioral, integrative, and interventional pain management, chronic pain syndromes, medical/legal issues, neurology, pain and chemical dependency, physical therapy, palliative care, and pharmacotherapy. There will also be full-day programs presented by the American Pain Society, the American Society of Pain Educators, the American Headache Society, and the International Pelvic Pain Society.
