MONTCLAIR, N.J., Oct. 16, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- PAINWeekEnd on November 10 at the

Westin Austin Downtown, 310 East 5th Street, Austin, Texas, will be an educational and exciting program providing busy clinicians and allied healthcare practitioners with 6.0 hours of relevant, practical instruction in the management of chronic pain.

Although Texas has one of the lowest rates of opioid deaths in the nation, at 4.9 per 100,000 people, a June 2018 editorial in The Dallas Morning News pointed out that overdose fatalities still grew by 9% from 2014 to 2016. A 13-member Select Committee on Opioids and Substance Abuse in the Texas House of Representatives is drafting recommendations due next month that may guide the development of new legislation in 2019. The impact of government action in this arena is among the topics to be considered at PAINWeekEnd Austin, where Gary W. Jay, MD, FAAPM, FACFEI, will discuss the development, impact, and unintended consequences of CDC guidelines on practitioners and patients with chronic noncancer and cancer pain.

Commenting on his course Year of the Locusts: The CDC Guidelines Impact on Practitioners and Patients, Dr. Jay observed, "Many functioning patients have had their opioid dosages diminished, either in concert with their physician or forcibly, without any say in the matter. This, along with a marked reduction in the amount of legal opioid medications that can be produced, has led to once-functional patients being abandoned by the medical field." Dr. Jay will also discuss the pathophysiology and clinical symptomology of migraine, and outline options for acute and prophylactic treatment, in his presentation Migraines A-Z.

Other course topics to be offered at PAINWeekEnd Austin include A Comedy of Errors: Methadone and Buprenorphine; Get Your Specimens in Order: How to Avoid Bad Company and Tame the Paper Beast Associated With Testing Drugs of Abuse; Trainwreck: Addressing Complex Pharmacotherapy With the Inherited Pain Patient; and Embrace Changes and Prevent Overdose: A Basic Blueprint for Legal Risk Mitigation and Response. Commercially supported activities—addressing a range of product, disease state, and medical information topics—will also be presented.

For more information about this or other regional conferences, and to register for $129, go to the PAINWeekEnd website. BONUS: PAINWeekEnd registrants may register for the 2019 PAINWeek National Conference, September 3-7, in Las Vegas, for $200 off the regular online published price.
