MONTCLAIR, N.J., Nov. 19, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- PAINWeekEnd on Saturday, December 8

at the Sheraton Agoura Hills, 30100 Agoura Road, Agoura Hills, California, will be an educational and exciting program providing busy clinicians and allied healthcare practitioners with 6.0 hours of relevant, practical instruction in the management of chronic pain.

On October 2, 2018, the State of California implemented CURES 2.0, under which prescribers of Schedule II, III, and IV controlled substances are required to consult the Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System (CURES) database prior to issuing a prescription for opioid medication, and periodically for as long as opioid therapy is part of the patient's treatment plan. California now becomes the 28th state to enact mandatory consultation of a PDMP before prescribing a controlled substance. At PAINWeekEnd Agoura Hills, Charles Louy, MD, PhD, will present IV Naloxone Infusion: A Hidden Gem, an exploration of an underutilized approach to reversing the panoply of opioid induced side effects without impacting analgesia. "Opioids remain the mainstay of analgesic therapy but are of course associated with a multitude of side effects," Dr. Louy observed. "Naloxone is a well-known antagonist used to reverse opioid induced respiratory depression, but less known is the evidence supporting the use of low dose IV naloxone to prevent and reverse other opioid induced adverse effects without reversing analgesia. I look forward to sharing our experience and clinical results from the implementation of low dose IV naloxone protocols at Cedars Sinai Medical Center."

Other courses to be offered at PAINWeekEnd Agoura Hills include A Comedy of Errors: Methadone and Buprenorphine; Recent Advances in Opioid Abuse Deterrent Formulations; Get Your Specimens in Order: The Importance of Individualized Test Orders and Timely Test Utilization; Trainwreck: Addressing Complex Pharmacotherapy With the Inherited Pain Patient; and Embrace Changes and Mitigate Legal Risks Associated with Opioid Prescribing and the Issue of Overdose: An Updated Blueprint for the Frontline Pain Practitioner and Medical Directors.

Commercially supported activities—addressing a range of product, disease state, and medical information topics—will also be presented.
