Fellowship-trained Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon Mark McFarland, D.O., performs a successful posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) with Less Exposure Surgery (LES) technology and NanoFuse Biologics.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va., June 18, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Fellowship-trained Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon Mark McFarland, D.O.,

of Newport News, Va., successfully completed a PLIF at Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital on June 14, utilizing SpineFrontier's REmind pedicle screw system and LES P-LIFT interbody cages. To further aid in the fusion, he incorporated NanoFuse Biologics, the only FDA approved blend of demineralized bone matrix (DBM) and bioactive glass. The patient, diagnosed with lumbar spondylosis with radiculopathy and lumbosacral spondylolisthesis, is recovering well with significant back pain resolution.

Dr. McFarland performed this surgery on a 55 year-old female patient, who experienced lower left back pain and weakness prior to the procedure. The patient failed conservative treatments, including therapy and pain management. She presented with significant left gluteal and left leg pain, described as sharp, aching and constant. Her MRI revealed significant disc bulging at two levels in the lower lumbar spine.

SpineFrontier's LES P-LIFT implant is composed of a sleek, low-profile design with specialized curvature created to minimize tissue disruption and spare patient bone during surgery. Shaped to conform to the patient's natural anatomy, this implant features an improved footprint for superior surgical access and stability thereafter.

"The design features of this LES P-LIFT implant allow for minimal operative retraction for placement and maximal endplate stability after insertion," attested Dr. McFarland. "I am confident this is the best interbody device I have ever used."

SpineFrontier's REmind screw system promotes stabilization of the vertebrae during surgery, while the NanoFuse Bioactive Matrix serves as a unique blend of synthetic bone that aids in fusion - combining the bone forming capabilities of demineralized bone with the healing properties of bioactive glass.
