NANTUCKET, Mass., Aug. 18 To commemorate the first-ever North American Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge circuit, Officine Panerai and Sail 4 Cancer hosted Dr. Bruce Chabner, internationally-renowned oncologist and cancer pharmacologist, and several cancer survivors and caretakers on the beautiful modern classic yacht Valiant on Monday, August 16th. Valiant is owned by Marblehead resident Gary Gregory who sailed the 60 ft. racing vessel to Nantucket last week in preparations to compete in the Opera House Cup. The Nantucket sail, made more intense by intermittent rain and boat-heeling which further proved the resilience and good-humor of the VIP guests on board, represented the second of many "respite" days that cancer patients in Massachusetts will enjoy through the efforts of Officine Panerai, MGH Cancer Center and Sail 4 Cancer.

Through this program Officine Panerai will provide cancer-stricken individuals of all ages and their caretakers relaxing and restorative days of sailing on beautiful vessels throughout the 2010 sailing season, in both Marblehead and Nantucket. This is being done in an effort to bring a broader exposure to the local physicians and researchers caring for afflicted patients, and to also give back to the communities which host the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge each year.
Last weekend, Officine Panerai hosted MGH Cancer Center Oncologists Dr. Paul Busse and Dr. Lori Wirth for a day on the water off the coast of Marblehead, followed by a sailing day with several of their patients and their patients' spouses. Over the course of these sailing days the physicians, patients and care-takers emphasized the importance of how "normal life" activities, such as a day of sailing, can make a positive impact on the patients and their families at a time when it may be needed most.
In Nantucket, Dr. Bruce Chabner, a prostate cancer survivor himself, attended the sail along with his wife who is a breast cancer survivor. He shared with the group that research shows more than one-third of cancer-related illnesses can be attributed to unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as excessive smoking, drinking or obesity. Dr. Chabner added, "Fresh air, a good diet and an active lifestyle - exactly what sailing is all about - is what is needed to try and keep non-genetic forms of the cancer virus at bay."
Sail 4 Cancer's mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals and their families who have been affected by cancer. Regardless of the prognosis or state of treatment, Sail 4 Cancer offers a variety of sailing experiences for individuals and their families, thereby giving them the opportunity to relax, escape the clinical environment and enjoy an afternoon in the clean, fresh, healing air of the sea in the hope that their quality of life may be improved.
Celebrating the sixth year as the leading sponsor of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, Officine Panerai invited Sail 4 Cancer to collaborate with them on this year's Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta (August 6-8; Marblehead, MA) and Nantucket Opera House Cup (August 13-15; Nantucket, MA) with the objective to, in some small way, improve the lives of residents of these passionate sailing communities who partner with Panerai to host the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge annually.
Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge next sails into Narragansett Bay in Newport, RI, to sponsor the Museum of Yachting Classic Yacht Regatta, September 4th and 5th where the overall North American circuit winner will be determined among the beautiful vessels participating in all three North American regattas.
