Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1893, Mercy Medical Center Des Moines (MMCD) is the longest continually operating hospital in Des Moines and one of the largest employers in the state. MMCD is a member of Mercy Health Network and part of Catholic Health Initiatives, a national nonprofit health organization.
"While other hospitals in Iowa offer laborists to provide 24/7 OB care, Mercy will be the first hospital in the state to offer an OBED," the MMCD announced in a recent newsletter, The Bulletin (p.2). "Women who are 14 weeks or more gestation will be cared for when they present with emergency symptoms related to their pregnancy. The OB hospitalist will also provide care for women who present with an OB emergency and don't have a designated OB, and give them contact information for care after discharge."
"We are absolutely delighted to count Mercy Medical Center as the 100th partner hospital in our growing national network," said OBHG Chief Executive Officer Lenny Castiglione. "Every member of the OBHG family enriches our powerful network of knowledge and resources. Our more than 530 clinicians all strengthen and refine our evidence-based best practices, ensuring that patients at our partner hospitals receive the most cost-effective, highest-quality OB care available anywhere in the country."
