Authors provide a primer on psychological trauma, helping readers identify and understand the common forms of trauma in society

INDIANAPOLIS, Aug. 5, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- As nurses know firsthand, the impact of psychological trauma is not

limited to those who experience it. Others—including nurses and caregivers—are indirectly affected. Understanding psychological trauma and its influence on nurses as individuals and on their patients is essential to nurses healing themselves—and bringing holistic care to others.

As nurses listen to, empathize with, and sometimes grieve with the people they care for, it's important to comprehend the "why" behind these feelings and actions. In The Influence of Psychological Trauma in Nursing, the latest book published by Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma), nurses gain awareness and knowledge about trauma and recovery. Filled with individual narratives, case studies, and trauma scripts based on evidence and current policy, this book helps nurses—especially students and those new to the profession—move forward as trauma-informed caregivers.

"To render trauma-informed patient care, nurses themselves need to feel psychologically safe and connected to others," said author Karen J. Foli, PhD, RN, FAAN. "Introducing the concept of nurse-specific trauma to students and new graduates will support a resilient workforce prepare to meet the needs of their patients."

The authors have also created the following downloads to support the use of this book in classroom settings: Instructor's Guide, Student Workbook, Trauma Vocabulary Quiz (plus answer key), Conceptual Model of Trauma. These and other supplemental files are available for free download at
