OTTAWA, March 19, 2018 /CNW/ - Mental Health Research Canada (MHRC) celebrated its official launch with an announcement fromfounding Chief Executive Officer Andrea Swinton in Ottawa.
MHRC is a charity exclusively funding mental health research and will be active across Canada
"Our country is home to some of the world's leading researchers and institutions. At Mental Health Research Canada, we will continue to support them as they bring invaluable hope to the one in five Canadians who will face mental health problems this year," said Ms. Swinton.
MHRC's launch coincides with meetings between the organization and federal government and other stakeholders, seeking further support for mental health research in Canada.
At the announcement, Ms. Swinton introduced the work of one of the 11 researchers receiving funding this year from MHRC, Dr. Marina Milyavskaya of Carleton University.
Ms. Swinton remarked, "We will continue to champion innovative researchers like Dr. Milyavskaya. And, over the coming months, we look forward to introducing each one who will be receive funding from us."
In 2018, MHRC will begin stakeholder consultations to further develop research priorities, with a focus on communities and people with lived experience.
MHRC appreciates the commitment from the Government of Canada in the 2018 Budget for fundamental research, and looks forward to working collaboratively to support mental health research in Canada.
