Baltimore City College, Goodwill Industries and CVS Health also celebrate first graduating class of students

BALTIMORE, Oct. 11, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Baltimore City Community College, Goodwill Industries,

and CVS Health today celebrated the opening of a new mock pharmacy, which will serve as an innovative classroom experience for aspiring pharmacy technicians and retail associates.

The CVS Mock Pharmacy, located on the Goodwill Industries campus in Baltimore, is a dynamic component of Baltimore City Community College and Goodwill's workforce training initiative for certified pharmacy technicians and retail sales associates. The program includes job readiness soft-skills training combined with classroom and field-based clinical instruction, creating a pipeline of pharmacy technicians and retail employees.

Baltimore City Community College's Workforce Development and Continuing Education Division has enjoyed a long-standing partnership with Goodwill Industries in supporting students in Adult Basic Education classes, as well as workforce training.

"Baltimore City Community College is continually looking for creative ways to give real-world experience to our students. The mock pharmacy is a prime example of providing hands-on training for a high-demand field," James H. Johnson Jr., president of Baltimore City Community College said.

With the development of the CVS Mock Pharmacy, students receive a richer learning experience, where they can apply what they are learning in the classroom. Pharmacy technician trainees are provided a 16-week pre-apprenticeship program, consisting of pharmacy calculations and theory courses, and CPR certification at Goodwill's Career Center, followed by a six-week Pharmacy Technician Clinical Externship provided by CVS Health. Each participant will sit for Maryland's Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) upon the completion of the training program. Students who successfully complete the training will be eligible to apply for a job at CVS Pharmacy.

"CVS Health is committed to breaking down the employment barriers faced by too many people in our country, including limited access to skills training," said Ernie Dupont, Senior Director, Workforce Initiatives, CVS Health. "By working with partners like Goodwill and Baltimore City Community College, we're able to help more people in Maryland find new career opportunities and access the security and prosperity that stable jobs provide."

"Goodwill is proud to be involved with this partnership with CVS Health and Baltimore City Community College. As part of our mission of providing job training and placement for Baltimore residents, this training center will connect people to careers in the healthcare field," Lisa Rusyniak, president & CEO of Goodwill, said.

The opening also marked the first class of graduates in the Certified Pharmacy Technician program. These students completed three steps in their path to a great new career: mastering pharmacy calculations and pharmacy theory, as well as their 160-hour clinical experience with CVS Pharmacy.
