NEC Electronics America Expands Lineup of Displays for Medical Imaging with Two New 21.3-Inch LCD Modules

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 22 NEC Electronics America, introduced two new 21.3-inch (54-centimeters diagonal) amorphous-siliconthin-film transistor (TFT) liquid-crystal display (LCD) modules for medicalimaging applications. The new color display modules represent the firstapplication of NEC LCD Technologies' proprietary ultra-advanced, super-fineTFT (UA-SFT) display technology in a 21.3-inch LCD. Combined with NEC LCDTechnologies' newly designed high-intensity direct-backlight system, themodules achieve very high luminance levels, high contrast ratios, highbrightness uniformity and ultra-wide viewing angles.

"These new modules fulfill the increasingly complex and sophisticateddisplay needs of the medical community by delivering superior performance andthe hard-to-achieve precise image quality needed for x-ray interpretation andmedical diagnosis," said Dr. Shigehiko Satoh, associate vice president andgeneral manager, displays strategic business unit, NEC Electronics America.

High Luminance, Contrast

The new LCD modules deliver high luminance levels for their respectiveresolutions. The NL160120AC27-20 module features ultra-extended graphics array(UXGA) resolution and a brightness level of 950 candelas per square meter(cd/m(2)), while the NL204153AC21-09 module has higher-density quad-extendedgraphics array (QXGA) resolution and a brightness level of 800 cd/m(2).

With UA-SFT technology, the new modules achieve a 20 percent improvementin light transmittance compared to modules based on super-advanced, super-fineTFT (SA-SFT) technology. Both modules also support monochrome imageinterpretation as a result of their precise reproduction of grayscale images.

Enhanced panel design combined with UA-SFT technology help prevent lightleakage and image and color distortion, thereby improving viewability of thedisplay from almost any angle. As a result, the NL160120AC27-20 andNL204153AC21-09 modules achieve high contrast ratios of 800:1 and 750:1,respectively. The panel design also inhibits the "washed-out black" phenomenonthat occurs when the viewing angle is enlarged -- a common issue with in-planeswitching-type LCD modules.
