BETHESDA, Md., Aug. 18, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Mytonomy, a leader in cloud-based patient experience solutions and microlearning education in healthcare, today announced the release of two videos they produced focused on "Language Matters" as part of their support around an awareness campaign and initiative to foster empowering language in healthcare. Aimed at healthcare professionals and the public at large, the initiative includes communications and videos produced by Mytonomy's Telly-award-winning content and production team. The videos promote the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) language recommendations to encourage healthcare providers to use person-centered, strengths-based language when speaking with and about people with diabetes and all chronic conditions. Additionally, in a departure from traditional education offerings, Mytonomy has incorporated these recommendations into their own microlearning video education available on the Patient Experience Cloud™ platform.

"Mytonomy is pleased to stand with ADA and AADE in support of using respectful and empowering language in healthcare. The language we use matters; it imparts hope and motivates and fosters collaboration between patients and providers. On the other hand, words can be stigmatizing and judgmental, making living with a chronic condition difficult and harder to manage," said Anjali Kataria, MPP and CEO of Mytonomy.

The AADE/ADA initiative centers on the core tenets that person-first, strengths-based, empowering language can improve the health and well-being of people with diabetes and other conditions and that the entire healthcare team, including the person living with diabetes, can act more effectively using respectful, inclusive and person-centered approaches. The language we use matters.

Deborah Greenwood, PhD, RN, BC-ADM, CDE, FAADE, 2015 AADE President, and Chief Digital Research Officer for Diabetes, Mytonomy, stated, "The content we create at Mytonomy aligns with these recommendations and we are pleased to be doing our part to raise awareness on this important topic. Our goal is to help decrease the burden of living with a chronic condition and reduce the stigma associated with diabetes."

"For example, instead of blaming or shaming words like "non-compliant", "uncontrolled", "sufferer" or "diabetic", Mytonomy follows the recommendations and suggests using "person living with diabetes", "working together", "partner" and other words that are collaborative and based on facts, actions and biology/physiology", explained Greenwood.

The Mytonomy "Language Matters" videos are being shared in part during the AADE Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland on August 17-20, and available to healthcare professionals at no cost to share with their institutions.

"As healthcare professionals, we strive to do everything we can to improve outcomes and the quality of life for people affected by diabetes, and language is a tool to do that," said Donna Ryan RD, RN, MPH, FAADE, 2018 AADE president, and vice president of population health at Ascension Florida. "Initiatives like this carry the conversation forward and build upon the work by AADE and others. Working together and choosing words that empower and motivate makes us better professionals and healthcare advocates."
