CALABASAS, Calif., March 14, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a statement from Bret Michaels provided by Michaels Entertainment Group in response to a recent story.

As an individual living with Type 1 diabetes since the age of 6, the story of Alec Raeshawn Smith in Minneapolis, Minnesota moves me. To start, my prayers & condolences go out to his family. As a brittle diabetic myself who is insulin dependent with a varying intake of 5 injections per day, I am committed in working towards a resolution to pull all parties together so that this never happens again. Like many others, my very life depends on the availability of insulin. In order for a resolution, we need to begin the conversation & I will personally make every attempt to discuss with President Trump as well as Secretary Of Health & Human Services Alex Azar in an effort to pull together the appropriate parties to begin this conversation.

I have lived with diabetes mostly all of my life & I have seen it claim the lives of family members & friends. It is the reason I fought so hard to win Celebrity Apprentice & it is the reason I continue to raise large sums of money for the American Diabetes Association & JDRF. It is the reason I raise diabetes awareness & the reason I send children to diabetes summer camp through my Life Rocks Foundation where they can learn to manage their diabetes, make friends with a common bond & so they can "just be kids". – Bret Michaels
