Working With Old Molecules: Lipstick on the Pig...or Mama's Got a Brand New Bag, scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, September 5, will address critical issues with monitoring and dosing methadone, including risk stratification for candidate selection, the implication of drug interactions, and the nuances of monitoring. Buprenorphine's intriguing pharmacology will be covered, along with dosing guidance for chronic pain. Participants will also learn how to treat acute pain in a patient receiving methadone or buprenorphine as part of an opioid agonist recovery program. The workshop will be led by senior PAINWeek faculty members Mary Lynn McPherson, PharmD, MA, MDE, BCPS, CPE, and Douglas Gourlay, MD, MSC, FRCPC, FASAM. "Practitioners today have a reasonable understanding of traditional opioids such as morphine, oxycodone, hydromorphone, and fentanyl," Dr. McPherson observed, "but there is less familiarity with buprenorphine and less comfort with methadone. Dr. Gourlay and I look forward to sharing some clinical pearls about these alternatives that have a place in the pain treatment armamentarium."
