OTTAWA, Oct. 1, 2018 /CNW/ - The Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) is proud to support the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health (CAMIMH) to raise awareness and promote important dialogue during Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW). Held each year during the first week of October, the annual campaign shines a light on the strength and resilience of Canadians living with a mental illness.

The 2018 Faces of Mental Illness, Shania Pruden, B Adair, Frédéric Tremblay, Sylvie Mercier and Julie Keddy, embody the spirit of this campaign as they share their experiences of living in recovery and remind us all that, with the right services and supports, people with mental illness can live fulfilling lives.

Over the course of this week, thousands of Canadians will echo this message. They will participate in events across Canada to bring attention to the mental health needs of people in Canada and urge everyone to push past stigma and believe that recovery is not only possible – but expected. We all have a role to play in fighting stigma, fostering safe spaces and finding better ways to support the needs of people living with a mental health problem or illness.

The recovery journey is unique to the individual. Responding to the needs of everyone living in Canada is core to the MHCC's Guidelines for Recovery-Oriented Practice. Recovery-oriented mental health services should respond to the needs of people at varied stages of life, from different backgrounds, sexual orientations, religious beliefs, language groups and physical abilities.

Join us in showing your support by proudly signing and displaying the Declaration of Commitment to Recovery and sharing on social media using #MIAW18.
