BOCA RATON, Fla., Nov. 29, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- A frightening new study was published and released last month in

the journal BMC Infectious Diseases published on August 29th, 2018 that finds airport TSA security check point bins are crawling with infectious viruses that can cause serious and in some cases life threatening illnesses for passengers (https://bmcinfectdis.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12879-018-3150-5). These viruses include various strains of Respiratory Viruses, Influenza A, and to a lesser degree the common cold. This not only affects the roughly 2.5 million people who fly every single day and exponentially grows to the people they come in contact with. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) there is a proven way passengers can protect themselves from this gauntlet of harmful germs.

This newly released study is quickly becoming a viral topic around the world and is confirmation of what we've all known about the various illness hazards of air travel. News outlets are using shocking headlines such as "Airport security trays are dirtier than toilet seats!" "Compare this to the humble toilet, which is usually held up as the epitome of filth. Of the 42 samples taken from toilet lids in the airport, not a single one carried a cold virus. This goes to show that regular cleaning goes a long way toward preventing the spread of disease -- and that the things we usually fear will contaminate us are not necessarily the most threatening.

From the report: One of the scientists involved in the study went on to say, "The results demonstrated that airports can serve as a potential risk zone for an 'emerging pandemic threat!" — a prospect that has already become a major concern in the aftermath of the 2002 SARS outbreak and the 2014 Ebola epidemic." They go on to say, "We found the highest frequency of respiratory viruses on plastic trays used in security check areas for depositing hand-carried luggage and personal items."

Another study recently featured October 2nd, 2018 on the Today Show (https://www.today.com/health/harmful-germs-lurking-planes-airports-how-avoid-getting-sick-t138513) had the same findings on the TSA security check point bins but their test also reveled that it gets much worse once you're on the plane. The seat belt buckles, passenger armrest and especially the fold down food trays scored off the charts for infectious viruses. One tray table also contained the bacteria pseudomonas and stenotrophomonas. The study revealed that "These are pathogenic bacteria where if they were get in to your eye or get in to a wound, they could definitely cause infection plus, they're more difficult to treat with antibiotics, which makes them even more concerning."

Their solution? Better cleaning practices that disinfect the trays and aircraft thoroughly on a more regular basis, and offering hand sanitizer to travelers both before and after handling… In other words it's up to the traveler to ensure their own health safety!
