The Beverly Hills plastic surgeon comments on a recent article that, while the current trend towards form-fitting workout clothes might be motivating some people to be more proactive about their bodily appearance, looking one's best in more revealing clothing has long been a beauty goal.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., May 24, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- A May 20 article in The

New York Post discusses reports from both United States and United Kingdom plastic surgeons' organizations that liposuction is increasing in popularity. The article theorizes that the current vogue for tight-fitting and revealing athleisure wear may be driving the trend. It's definitely true that liposuction is more popular than ever as a weapon in the battle for the body beautiful, says Beverly Hills-based plastic surgeon Payam Jarrah-Nejad, M.D., F.I.C.S., F.A.C.S., aka Dr. J. He says, however, that the impulse to look good in clothing that does more emphasizing than concealing has been driving the popularity of bodily procedures for a very long time.

Dr. J notes that the reason we call revealing swimsuits bikinis derives from well-publicized 1946 tests of the atomic bomb in the Bikini Atoll Pacific islands. The suits were so exciting in that more modest era that the swimsuit's designers thought that the impact would feel downright nuclear. They were not wrong, says Dr. J. In the decades since, all kinds of clothes for women but also for men have grown smaller and more demanding of a lean physique. The plastic surgeon notes that liposuction is not about weight loss, however, and is instead meant to deal with stubborn pockets of fat that don't respond to exercise and low-calorie diets. He adds that not just women want to look good in swimsuits and yoga pants, but men desiring to make the right impression in skinny jeans and form-fitting shirts have sought out the procedure to deal with love handles, cellulite and, for an increasing number of men, oversized breasts (aka gynecomastia).

Not all liposuction, however, is about very athletic people trying to perfect their appearance, says Dr. J. People who have experienced significant weight loss, either due to pregnancy or a successful weight loss surgery often deal with both loose skin accompanied by unsightly fatty deposits, he says. In these cases, many people turn to both liposuction and the body contouring procedure popularly known as the tummy tuck to deal with unattractive and sometimes uncomfortable folds of skin, says the plastic surgeon.

While these kinds of procedures can be highly effective, Dr. J notes that a patient's choice of the right doctor is extremely important. It's important to only work with board-certified plastic surgeons who have good reputations and who have performed the procedure before. It's also a very good idea to look at before-and-after picture galleries and social media reviews to make sure you get the most from your surgery, says Dr. J.

Dr. J's qualifications as a double board-certified Beverly Hills plastic surgeon can be seen online as well as a number of photo galleries and five-star reviews. Interested readers may call his office at (310) 228-3151 to set an initial consultation to find out if liposuction or other procedure makes sense for them.
