The Los Angeles based weight loss surgery clinic comments that the study's findings on reduced melanoma risk with bariatric patients adds to the growing list of health issues that can potentially lessened through bariatric procedures.

LOS ANGELES, May 31, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- A May 23 article in The Los

Angeles Times discussed a recent study from Sweden which showed that patients who had bariatric surgery saw their risk of getting skin cancer decline 42% over the course of the study. The study compared 2,007 obese patients who choose to undergo bariatric surgery, along with 2,040 participants who were deemed to be similar to the first group, yet did not elect to have weight loss surgery. The group conducting the study did not come to a clear consensus as to why the drop in risk occurred, but posited that deep weight loss (the reduction in visceral fat stored around the vital organs) was the most likely cause.

Dr. Feiz & Associates says that this finding adds melanoma to the long list of medical issues that weight loss surgery has been shown to reduce the risk of occurring. Heart disease and Type-2 diabetes are often the two most studied and talked about diseases that weight loss surgery is shown to help prevent, yet there are many other documented benefits, including the easement of joint pain, depression, and sleep apnea in some patients. Of course, they add, losing weight through weight loss surgery is not a guaranteed way to prevent any one of these disorders, but a large number of studies have shown that the risk for bariatric patients can be greatly reduced.
