Lilly Recognized as One of the World's Top Biopharmaceutical Employers

INDIANAPOLIS, Oct. 10 Eli Lilly and Company(NYSE: LLY) announced today that it has made the list of Top 20biopharmaceutical employers, according to the prestigious peer-reviewedjournal Science. Science's 2008 survey polled nearly 4,000 employees from 500employers in the biotechnology, biopharmaceutical, pharmaceutical and relatedindustries. This year Lilly ranks number 10 on the list, up one position fromlast year's survey.

The web-based survey aims to determine the most reputable employers in thelife science industries based on 23 characteristics, including among others,treating employees with respect, financial strength, easy adaptation tochange, and a research-driven environment. The survey results appeared intoday's issue of Science.

"It is an honor for Lilly to be recognized as one of the industry's topemployers based on these important criteria," said John Lechleiter, Ph.D.,Lilly president and chief executive officer. "Respect for people has alwaysbeen a core value of Eli Lilly and Company, and this acknowledgementunderscores Lilly's commitment to our employees and the patients we serve."

Approximately 25 percent of Lilly's 2007 sales came from biotechmedicines; this makes the biotech portion of the company's business theequivalent of the world's fifth largest biotech company. Biotech moleculesalso represent approximately one-third of the company's current pipelineincluding potential treatments targeting Alzheimer's disease, cancer anddiabetes.
