PLEASANTON, Calif., April 5, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Leaf Healthcare, developer of one of the world's most innovative patient monitoring systems, and global medical technology business Smith & Nephew will make their debut joint appearance at the Symposium on Advanced Wound Care Spring meeting (SAWC) in San Diego April 5–9, 2017.

The Leaf patient monitor system uses a wearable, wireless sensor to track patient movement and signal caregivers when intervention is needed to prevent immobility-related health complications, such as pressure ulcers/injuries. It is designed to help reduce the risk of developing ulcers/injuries as part of a full clinical protocol, making it highly complementary to Smith & Nephew's existing portfolio in this area, such as ALLEVYN™ LIFE and SECURA™ skin care products.

Leaf will be on display in the SAWC exhibition hall at booth number 1105 and at an adjoining satellite Smith & Nephew booth (number 1109). Leaf will also be on display at the main Smith & Nephew booth (number 321).

There will be a continuing medical education satellite symposium at SAWC entitled ''Reducing Hospital Acquired Pressure Injury by Optimizing Patient Turning: Improving Outcomes with Real-Time Monitoring Technology '' (Thursday 7:30 am).

In February 2017, Smith & Nephew announced that it had taken a strategic investment and signed a distribution agreement with Leaf Healthcare. Smith & Nephew stated this partnership supports their priority to innovate for value by delivering solutions that help healthcare professionals better improve the life of their patients. SAWC Spring is the first conference at which the companies have appeared together.

"The benefits of patient turning and improved mobility are well recognized, including the potential for shorter hospital stays," said Dr. Barrett Larson, Leaf co-founder and CEO. "We are really excited as partnering with Smith & Nephew has allowed us to make our award-winning technology more widely available to clinicians across the United States, which benefits patients and potentially reduces the cost of care."

The Leaf Patient Monitoring system was recently recognized as one of the most innovative wearable technologies in the world at the Wearable Tech World Cup in Germany. It was also named one of the most innovative medical devices in North America by Frost & Sullivan, a global consulting firm that called the Leaf product "the industry's most advanced tracking system."
