The winning article concludes that "Six-year results from 438 women show that the structured breast implant has high patient and surgeon satisfaction, a low rate of capsular contracture, and a low rate of rupture/deflation." The paper explains that the structured breast implant "uses different technology than unstructured saline or silicone gel implants, making it a third type of implant . . . filled with saline but with an internal structure consisting of a series of nested shells that support the upper pole when upright and control fluid movement. It combines certain key features and benefits of unstructured saline and silicone gel implants. The filler is only saline, which women like for peace of mind in case of rupture/deflation."

While the winning article presented the six-year data available at the time of its writing, the eight-year IDEAL IMPLANT trial data became available last year and confirmed lower rates of complications compared to silicone gel implant trial data. For instance, the risk of implant rupture or deflation with IDEAL IMPLANT at eight years after primary breast augmentation was only 2.1%, compared to 7.2% - 13.6% with silicone gel implants. Likewise, IDEAL IMPLANT rates of Baker
class III/IV capsular contracture at eight years after primary augmentation were only 6.6%, compared to 10.9% - 16.2% with silicone gel implants.

The structured breast implant was developed by a plastic surgeon and has undergone over ten years of testing and development. It has been approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Health Canada since November 2014
. The smooth-surfaced implant also addresses recent concerns and implant recalls associated with a rare form of cancer associated with textured-surfaced implants.
The PRS award is based on a weighted score including the number of views, re-reads, saves, and shares that it received over time compared to all articles in the cosmetic surgery category in 2018. PRS stated the article was found to be the best of the year "by a distinct margin," further indicating surgeons' growing interest in this new technology. The winning article can be found here.
