LANDOVER, Md., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- For more than twenty years, Giant Food has provided seasonal flu shots as part of its Health & Wellness initiative in a continuing effort to best meet the needs of its customers during the cough and cold season. "As part of our continued commitment to provide value to our customers, Giant Food is offering seasonal flu shots for $20 when customers use their Giant card," said Jim Wonderly, vice president of pharmacy operations for Giant Food. "Unfortunately, many Americans are foregoing medical care because of increased costs, and Giant wants to do our part by offering affordable immunizations during these challenging economic times."

Seasonal flu shots will be administered at a reduced price in most Giant stores starting Friday September 11, expanding to all stores in October. Immunizations will be provided by certified and trained Giant pharmacists and through Giant's partnership with Maxim Health Systems and their trained health care professionals. The cost of the seasonal immunization is $30, but customers with a Giant loyalty card can save an additional $10. Thus, the final cost to Giant customers, with the Card, is $20.

"We believe our job is to prove to our customers that we are the best food and drug store, and that's why we are offering this season's flu shots at such a great value," said Robin Michel, executive vice president and general manager of Giant Food.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is important that individuals at higher risk of having serious seasonal flu complications be vaccinated each year. People who should be vaccinated include:

Additionally, Giant is working closely with local and state officials and the CDC, to prepare for the eventual administration of the H1N1 ("swine") flu vaccine.
