Always be transparent, reach out often, and be up-to-date on industry changes as they happen.

Staying relevant. Brokers must invest in themselves to remain successful. Attend seminars, conferences, and training sessions to sharpen skills and learn about up-and-coming benefit offerings. Voluntary benefits are evolving—such as the advent of wellness programs, wearables, and telemedicine—and there are always new cost-cutting strategies to learn and implement. Brokers may think they are too busy during open enrollment to seek additional education, but it is the perfect time because that information can be extremely helpful for brokers and their clients during the open enrollment process.

Being relatable. Today's workforce is a mixture of several generations. Brokers must adapt to each client. For example, when meeting with an older workforce, dressy attire is appropriate and appreciated. However, jeans and a casual shirt will be fine for clients who employ millennials and Gen Z. Language must be also tailored to each generation. It is the broker's job to get to know the client and realize the best ways deliver pertinent information during the critical open enrollment period.
