Gov. Daniels Misses Opportunity to Show Connection Between Social and Fiscal Issues

WASHINGTON, May 10, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Family Research Council President Tony Perkins released the following statement after Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels signed the nation's first state law that removes taxpayer dollars from entities that promote abortion:

"This law is a tremendous victory for the pro-life movement and for taxpayers who will no longer be forced to pad the profit line of Indiana Planned Parenthood abortion clinics. Nothing is more fiscally responsible than slashing $2 million from the budget of an organization that hasn't proven it can follow the law.

"While Governor Daniels should be commended for signing such groundbreaking pro-life legislation, I believe he missed a perfect opportunity to show the connection between social and fiscal responsibility.  While the fiscal crisis facing our country must be addressed, the next President must also demonstrate leadership on social and foreign policy issues.

"This victory didn't happen in a vacuum.  State lawmakers and the American people are responding to the radical fiscal and social policy of the Obama administration. President Obama clearly has no intentions of taking his foot off the accelerator when it comes to his social agenda. This is why there can be no 'truce' with liberals on fundamental issues like life, marriage, and ordered liberty. It always results in unilateral disarmament of conservatives.

"A clear message has been sent to Washington : As long as the liberal push continues, expect a strong counter push from the states," concluded Perkins.
