New York University Study Reveals the Truth about Artificial Sweeteners.

NEW YORK, July 9, 2016 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- New research suggests that artificial sweeteners might be a mixed blessing

when it comes to obese people who wish to cut down on caloric intake. The New York University Faculty of Health researchers discovered that such non-sugar sweeteners can be an effective calorie reducer, but carry side effects that are not so healthful.

Dr. Pankaj Naram says the results of studies like this are useful for educational reasons because so many millions of people use artificial sweeteners on a daily basis. Those who designed the study noted that there are now all sorts of non-aspartame sweeteners on the market, as well as the old standbys, plain sugar and saccharine.

The negative side effect of aspartame in the study was poor glucose management for the obese patients. Until now, it had been thought that aspartame was not digested by the stomach. This current research, however, demonstrates that artificial sweeteners are in fact broken down by stomach acid and interfere in some way with glucose management.

In fact, there have been many advances in imitation sweeteners in recent years as consumers have been avoiding aspartame. Many products on store shelves now draw attention to the fact that they do not contain aspartame. Organic sugar, saccharine, and cane sugar are making a comeback. In addition, some consumers who had shunned sugar for many years are now learning to enjoy the sweet stuff in small amounts.
