LOS ANGELES, May 6 Dr. Aykut Bayrak, a fertility specialist and the Medical Director of PRC/SIRM, reported the first baby delivered this week from a chromosomally tested frozen egg in Southern California.

The baby was born May 3rd following In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatment that involved egg freezing combined with a new genetic test called Comparative Genomic Hybridization (CGH). The birth paves the way for successful pregnancies for women who prefer to delay childbearing.

"Egg freezing offers women an excellent choice," Dr. Bayrak said. "Women are born with a finite number of eggs and their egg reserve decreases over time. If a woman desires to delay pregnancy, she can now 'stop her biological clock' by freezing her eggs with the genetic testing that our center offers."

Egg freezing has emerged as a viable option for fertility preservation in the last decade but it has not been possible to reliably screen eggs for chromosomal abnormalities until recently. CGH makes it possible to identify chromosomally normal eggs at the time of egg freezing to be used later when pregnancy is desired. When chromosomally normal eggs are used for IVF the risk of miscarriages and birth defects are expected to be significantly lower.

In this case, eggs were screened genetically and frozen. When pregnancy was desired, only three chromosomally normal eggs were thawed, all of them survived and a single embryo was transferred into the patient's uterus, which resulted in a singleton healthy live birth.

According to Dr. Bayrak, in a healthy woman younger than 35, only 30-40% of the eggs obtained are chromosomally normal. It is important to know if the eggs are normal at the time of freezing when there is still time to freeze more eggs.

"You don't want to find out that all your frozen eggs were chromosomally abnormal in the future when you need them to have a baby," Dr. Bayrak said.

Dr. Bayrak is double board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. He received his graduate training at the University of Southern California (USC) and currently has offices in West Los Angeles, Glendale and the Inland Empire. He specializes in complex infertility cases, IVF and fertility preservation using egg freezing and CGH.
