PEKIN, Ill., Nov. 14, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- For what is a first time at the annual iaedp™ Symposium, Adele Lafrance, PhD, co-developer of the Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) for Eating Disorders, will present an overview of the EFFT model with a focus on supporting research and practical skills for take-away as one of the keynote speakers at the 2019 event.
Next year's 33rd iaedp™ Symposium is slated for February 7-10, 2019 at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort in Palm Desert, California. Early registration, which offers lower conference rates for attendees, is still available for a limited time and can be found at iaedp.com.
"Based on the science of emotion and interpersonal neurobiology," says Dr. Lafrance, "EFFT offers a structure to support caregivers to increase their role in their loved one's recovery from an eating disorder in specific ways."
Emotion-Focused Family Therapy is rooted in a deep belief in the healing power of families. Based on the science of interpersonal neurobiology and emotion, the essence of the model is to support caregivers to increase their role in their loved one's recovery from an eating disorder in the following domains:
1. Behavior coaching through the interruption of symptoms; 2. Emotion coaching through the processing of avoided or suppressed emotion; and 3. Relationship repair through the healing of parent, child and family wounds.
Throughout treatment, the clinician also seeks to identify, understand, and transform "emotion blocks," according to Dr. Lafrance, in caregivers that may lead to therapy-interfering attitudes or behaviors such as denial, criticism of accommodating & enabling behaviors. This component is critical given that throughout the course of treatment, well-intentioned caregivers can struggle to support their loved one's treatment, creating challenges for even the most experienced clinicians. For this reason, there is a module for the identification and processing of clinician blocks as well.
Dr. Lafrance is an Associate Professor at Laurentian University and a licensed clinical psychologist with a practice of short-term clinical care and supervision. Dr. Lafrance provides EFFT training for clinicians, school boards and mental health agencies worldwide and has published extensively in the field and currently supports the research base for EFFT.
