Debuting in RDH Magazine's December 2019 issue, the study is the largest and most comprehensive dental professional survey of its kind. Conducted between June 2019 and September 2019, the study consists of 30 questions ranging from compensation and benefits to how dental industry employees felt about their roles in the dental community and timely changes happening in the industry.

Surveying a variety of topics, participants were asked to rate career satisfaction, providing comments and testimonial feedback where employers can improve. The results, combined with demographic data, uncover key trends across generations, as well as private practice and corporate (DSO) work place environments.

Key Findings for 2020:

  • 44 percent of dental hygienist participants are satisfied with their overall pay.
  • 38 percent are happy with their overall employee benefits. Flexible scheduling and paid holidays are the benefits that dental hygienists value most.
  • 24 percent feel overworked and would prefer to work fewer hours. Only 8 percent of respondents would prefer to work more hours.
  • 43 percent of dental hygienists are open to a job change within a year.

"DentalPost and RDH Magazine are committed to conducting a multi-year industry study. Over 8,800 dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants and front office employees have already participated," commented Tonya Lanthier, RDH, CEO and Founder of DentalPost.

Lanthier continues, "Starting with the 'State of the RDH Career in 2020,' we will be publishing reports and insights for dental professionals and practice leaders. With our combined knowledge and resources, these reports will lead the industry, providing a new standard for critical data about hiring and retention."

Almost half of the respondents earn between $51,000 and $70,000, with 16 percent making more than $80,000. The majority of dental hygienists are paid hourly. The segment of dental hygienists reporting the highest level of satisfaction are hygienists that are paid a guaranteed base against a percentage of production.

The survey found several coaching opportunities to help employers retain employees, including improving the annual review process. Beyond disappointment in their annual raise (61 percent dissatisfied or very dissatisfied), respondents overwhelmingly expressed confusion and frustration with the review process itself. As for employee benefits, health insurance is the benefit dental hygienists would like to see employers focus on the most.

Additional information about the study, including results for dentists, dental assistants and front office staff is posted on DentalPost's website, https://www.dentalpost.net/salary-survey/.
