Defense Health Board Meeting

FALLS CHURCH, Va., Feb. 22 The Defense Health Board today announced details of its first meeting in calendar year 2010. Sessions will occur on March 1 and 2, 2010. On March 1, briefings and discussions will take place at the Doubletree Hotel, 2080 North Atlantic Avenue, Cocoa Beach, Florida. The morning session from 9:15 am to 12:30 pm and the afternoon session from 1:45 pm to 5:00 pm will be open to the public in accordance with Federal Advisory Committee Act provisions. March 2 will entail several visits by Board members to installation activities in the vicinity of Cocoa Beach.

The March meeting will include briefings on military health needs and priorities. According to Dr. Wayne Lednar, co-vice president of the Board, "We try to hold meetings in locations where Board members may gain a more comprehensive understanding of unique military requirements and how health affects mission readiness. In this way we as a Board are better informed when advising the Department on health policy issues, research, prevention, promotion, treatment and delivery of care; all medical matters supporting mission accomplishment for the Armed Forces."

Several Defense Health Board subcommittees will present updates to the Board: National Capital Region Base Realignment and Closure, Department of Defense Task Force on the Prevention of Suicide by Members of the Armed Forces, Military/Occupational Health and Medical Surveillance, and the Psychological Health External Advisory Subcommittee. Additionally, the Board will receive briefs regarding electronic medical records for military medicine and the status of the new Joint Pathology Center.

Any member of the public may submit written comments to the Defense Health Board. Statements should be addressed to the Board's Designated Federal Official through the Executive Secretary and sent so that they are received at least 10 calendar days prior to the meeting.

Defense Health Board is a Federal Advisory Committee to the Secretary of Defense. It provides independent scientific advice/recommendations on matters relating to operational programs, health policy development, health research programs, and requirements for the treatment and prevention of disease and injury, promotion of health and the delivery of health care to DoD beneficiaries.
