It was a proud moment for the NGO, having facilitated till date 313 donations, the highest ever in the country. Since 2009, the NGO has been relentlessly working towards saving lives of patients suffering from Blood Cancer and Thalassemia.
Present on the occasion, Dr. Niranjan N Rathod, Associate Director & Head of Department, Haemato-Oncology & Bone Marrow Transplant, Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital said, "We have a huge number of patients suffering from fatal blood disorders like Blood Cancer and Thalassemia Major for whom the last resort is a Blood Stem Cell transplant. For patients who could not find a match within their family there was no hope. It is only with help of registries like DATRI that there is a ray of hope for such patients. It is therefore important for more people to register with DATRI to help save more lives."
In the last eight years DATRI has worked towards spreading awareness on Blood Stem Cell Donations through numerous camps held across educational institutions, corporates and residential areas. As a result, there has been a considerable rise in the awareness levels among youngsters and professionals.
Speaking at the proud moment, Ms. Sethukarasi.S, Head of Operations, DATRI said, "300 donations is indeed a great achievement for us. We have come a long way from the time when we were struggling to find our first matched donor with a one-man army to being a team of dedicated professionals who work day and night to ensure every matched donor is a life saver."
Speaking on the occasion Mr. Darasing Khurana, Mr. India International & Brand Ambassador for DATRI, who believes in the act of giving said, "When you are able to gift someone the most precious thing - LIFE while you are alive - it makes one a Superhero. I feel blessed on being part of DATRI and this wonderful cause. I urge all to register as Blood Stem Cell Donors with DATRI."
Ms. Amber Bernachi, Miss Eco International 2017 says, "I am excited to meet all these selfless DATRI donors who have gifted Life to an unrelated person. I feel blessed and overwhelmed to be part of this wonderful occasion."
Today, though DATRI has over 2,90,000 registered volunteer donors, still there is a need to raise awareness on the importance of Blood Stem Cell Donation and increase the donor pool.
There are over 1500+ patients registered with DATRI who are waiting for an unrelated matched donor. A patient has only a 25% chance of finding a matched donor from within his/her family. With a '1 in 10000' to '1 in over a million' chance of finding an unrelated HLA genetically matched donor, DATRI needs more volunteer donors to sign up with registries like DATRI.
DATRI is a not-for-profit organization co-founded by Mr. Raghu Rajagopal, Dr. Nezih Cereb and Dr. Soo Young Yang in 2009. The vision of the organization is to find a willing matched donor for every patient suffering from fatal blood-related disorders and in need of a blood stem cell transplant.
DATRI is India's largest adult unrelated blood stem cell donors' registry with over 2,90,000 voluntary donors registered. DATRI has facilitated 313 donations till today including 39 donations for international patients. DATRI has helped patients from 59 hospitals across the world.
DATRI is an associate of Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide (BMWD) and a member of World Marrow Donors Association (WMDA).
