MOUNT LAUREL, N.J., Aug. 21, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Without direction from an able patient, decision-making about treatment at the end of life can be agonizing. The potential for ethical conflict increases when the patient is a child and the parents disagree with the health care team—or even with each other—about next steps.

Creating an ethically-reasoned framework for handling such challenges is the focus of the first in the CMLearning Network® webinar series hosted by the Commission for Case Manager Certification®. The CMLearning Network, a resource center for today's case manager, provides face-to-face, online and on-demand learning for professional and board-certified case managers.

The Sept. 12 webinar, "Impasses and Ethical Challenges at the End of Life: From the NICU to the SICU," is presented by Laura Guidry-Grimes, Ph.D., an assistant professor at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in the Department of Medical Humanities and Bioethics. Guidry-Grimes serves as a clinical ethicist at UAMS and at the only children's hospital in the state, Arkansas Children's.

The Commission also announced it is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

"About 89 percent of board-certified case managers come from a nursing background," said Commission CEO MaryBeth Kurland. "The Commission strongly supports professional development and lifelong learning. Being able to provide continuing nursing education as well as CCM continuing education underscores our ongoing commitment to workforce development." Nurses from all backgrounds can now take advantage of the Commission's educational offerings to earn contact hours towards registered nursing license and ANCC certification renewals.

The CMLearning Network webinar series spotlights current case management issues and solutions and feature presentations by national experts on topics as diverse as ethics and quality measurement. These high-demand webinars are limited to the first 500 case managers who sign up.

The Commission will host six webinars through May 2019. The first, featuring Guidry-Grimes, is set for Sept. 12, 2018, from 1 to 2 p.m. Eastern. It's free to both professional and board-certified case managers and may be used as an important workforce tool for supervisors interested in engaging staff in topic-related discussions. Board-certified case managers and nurses may register to earn continuing education credit and/or contact hours for a small fee.

Other topics in the 2018-2019 series include care management, regulatory and market-based changes that affect case managers, consumer-generated health information and client engagement tools.

The Commission's CMLearning Network Resource Center includes live webinars, issue briefs, the CCMC New World Symposium®, CareManagement journal, Certification 360™ face-to-face workshops, Certification 24/7™ on-demand webinars, Pre-Approved Continuing Education (PACE) and CCMC's Case Management Body of Knowledge® (CMBOK®) web-based learning platform.
