PEKIN, Ill., Jan. 13, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- When the 2019 iaedp™ Symposium opens on February 7, attendees will take part in nearly 100 workshops, presentations and networking events with some of the best-known eating disorder treatment and healthcare professionals participating from both the U.S. and internationally.
Among the most compelling workshops will be "'But I'm Not Underweight!' When Atypical Anorexia in Adolescents Is Not So Atypical," presented by Joanna Wiese, PhD, Michaela Voss, MD and Beth Harrell, MS, RD, LD, CEDRD-S. It is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, February 8 of this year's iaedp™ Symposium, which will run February 7 – 10 at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort in Palm Desert, California. The nearly two-hour workshop will present current evidence on the prevalence of atypical anorexia nervosa in adolescents in the setting of America's childhood obesity epidemic. Presenters will address when restrictive eating patterns are prescribed for higher weight adolescents as a means to achieve a healthy weight and at what point these eating patterns become an eating disorder.
The presenters also will discuss the cultural norms and nuances at play in diagnosing and treating adolescents with atypical anorexia and how instilling passion during recovery is effective, even when it is counter-cultural to give up behaviors which are maintaining a suppressed body weight deemed healthy by societal norms and medical guidelines.
The primary presenter for the workshop is Dr. Wiese, a psychologist at Children's Mercy Kansas City outpatient eating disorder specialty clinic and an Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri Kansas City Medical School in the department of Pediatrics. She has treated eating disorders in a variety of inpatient, residential and outpatient treatment settings and has done research on eating disorders and relevant behaviors among college students. She also has clinical training and research experience in behavioral treatments for eating disorders, including family-based treatment.
One of two co-presenters is Dr. Voss, who graduated medical school from the University of Kansas Medical Center–Kansas City in 2010. She completed pediatric residency in 2013 at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, and afterwards, she graduated from the adolescent medicine fellowship in 2016 at Seattle Children's Hospital – Seattle. Dr. Voss joined
the Adolescent Medicine Department at Children's Mercy-Kansas City in 2016. Her current clinical focus includes eating disorders, transgender care and mental health. Her research includes eating disorders within the transgender community and creating a national eating disorder database with the Society of Adolescent Health and Medicine.
The second co-presenter is Beth Harrell, who began her work with eating disorders in 1995 in an inpatient/residential setting. Since then, she has worked in all levels of care and with AN, BN, BED and ARFID, among ages 8-78. Harrell spent the last 8 years working in outpatient care with children and adolescents. She is an active member of the Missouri Eating Disorders Council since 2014 and provides training for RDs across the state. Harrell also serves on the board for the Body Balance Coalition in Kansas City and has been on the iaedp™ Certification Committee for the past five years and as Director of Certification since May 2017.
