STORY SUMMARY:
March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month -- a time when all adults over 50 should think about getting screened and encourage their friends and family to do the same. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), nearly 150,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with colorectal cancer every year. Nearly 50,000 of them will likely die of the disease.

Colorectal cancer is often preventable, and can be successfully treated more than 90% of the time when detected early (National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance). But, the American Cancer Society reports that only 50 percent of Americans aged fifty and over get screened according to recommended guidelines
Colorectal cancer survivors Bob and Katie Hendrickson are among those who avoided preventative screening, and delayed testing even after developing symptoms. One of the most effective screening procedures is colonoscopy, revolutionized by innovations from Olympus.
During a colonoscopy, physicians can detect and remove polyps before they turn into cancer, and colorectal cancer can be detected early, when it can be cured. Doctors used an Olympus High-Definition colonoscope for Katie Hendrickson's test, which allows for clear visualization of the colon.
