The article examines the impact of pharmacist interventions on medication adherence and adverse events in clinical trials focusing on diabetes.  Clinical trial research pharmacists (CTRPs), provided by Center Point Clinical Services, were engaged to communicate with patients to support clinical trial protocol adherence, retention and outcomes in 12 clinical trials involving two non-insulin glucose lowering medications (NIGLMs). Pharmacists called enrolled study participants at specific time points during the trials and were available 24/7 to receive patient calls for most trials. During each telephone call, the number and types of interventions were documented and descriptive statistics were performed.

Mr. Martinez, said, "Just over 25 thousand calls were made during these 12 studies. Of these calls, 45.5% had at least one intervention involving 92.3% of the patients. Interestingly, 56% of the interventions were classified as high impact and that would have seriously negatively influenced the trial outcomes."

Mr. Martinez continued, "We learned from this initiative that pharmacists are indeed able to help improve the clinical trial process.  We found that the pharmacists successfully supported and addressed multiple types of interventions related to medication management, use, and adverse events. The result was better patient compliance, outcomes and ultimately, more reliable and robust study results."
