Cannabis and Cannabinoids: Kissing Cousins or Good Cop/Bad Cop? will be a case- based exploration of the scientific evidence that supports or refutes the use of cannabinoids, including clinical pharmacology, acute and chronic adverse effects, and the appropriate use of FDA-approved and other cannabinoids. The half-day session will also consider the interrelationship between cannabis and opioids, the management of long-term consequences of cannabis use, and how practitioners can use our growing evidence base to recommend cannabis products in states where cannabis is approved for medical use. Senior PAINWeek faculty members Douglas Gourlay, MD, MSC, FRCPC, FASAM, and Mary Lynn McPherson, PHARMD, MA, MDE, BCPS, CPE, will lead the workshop, that will be presented on Tuesday, September 4. Dr. Gourlay commented "I look forward to joining Dr. McPherson in detailing what we know—and what we don't know—about medical cannabis and cannabinoids, and the challenges confronting prescribers who are being asked to recommend marijuana for their patients with pain. It's a complicated topic from both a regulatory and therapeutic perspective, and we hope to offer workshop participants a commonsense approach to follow."
