Discussion Sponsored by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Advocacy Alliance

WASHINGTON, June 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressional Quarterly Inc., the nation's premier provider of news and analysis on Congress, politics and public policy, today announced it will convene a panel of scientific experts and policy leaders for the CQ Forum on Health: Innovations in Cancer Research, sponsored by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Advocacy Alliance. The event will be held on Wed., June 4, at the Columbus Club, Union Station, 50 Massachusetts Ave., N.E, in Washington, DC, from 8:00 to 11 a.m. The program begins at 9:00 a.m. with keynote remarks at 9:15 a.m.

Great strides have been made in the field of cancer research. The next several decades could be among the most exciting in this field with the development of new diagnostic tools and individualized therapies that could revolutionize the detection and treatment of cancer. But stagnant federal funding could put these innovations at risk.

The keynote speaker is Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX).

"Senator Kennedy's illness is a poignant example for why we must renew the war on cancer, which Sen. Kennedy and I are committed to doing with new legislation in the coming weeks," said Senator Hutchison.

The panel will discuss a range of topics including important research breakthroughs on the horizon, and how researchers are facing the challenge of increasingly scarce resources. Panelists include:

-- Raymond DuBois, M.D., Ph.D., American Association for Cancer Research and MD Anderson Cancer Center, University of Texas

-- Joe Gray, Ph.D., National Cancer Institute and University of California San Francisco

-- Elmer Huerta, M.D., American Cancer Society

-- Richard Schilsky, M.D., American Society of Clinical Oncology and University of Chicago School of Medicine

-- Eric Winer, M.D., Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

-- Mary Woolley, Research!America

"We are standing on the threshold of major breakthroughs in cancer research," said Hala Moddelmog, president and CEO of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. "We are pleased to sponsor this event in Washington today to highlight these breakthroughs and their benefits."

The forum is part of a series of Washington DC events surrounding the annual Komen Race for the Cure taking place that weekend.
