PORTLAND, Ore., March 22, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN), the benchmark for nursing certifications across the emergency spectrum, today named Juanito (June) Guadalupe, BSN, RN, CEN, TCRN, CCRN, CMC, CNRN, a trauma nurse at the world-renowned R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, University of Maryland in Baltimore, as its 2018 Distinguished TCRN Award recipient. The award was presented during the Society of Trauma Nursing (STN) Annual Member Meeting which was held during STN's TraumaCon 2018 conference at the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront.
The annual award recognizes a Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN) who has made an extraordinary effort to promote the value of board certification in trauma nursing. The TCRN credential, which is the first and only national specialty certification focused solely on trauma nursing, recognizes the specialized knowledge and skills necessary to deliver exceptional quality across the trauma care continuum. BCEN developed the TCRN certification program in partnership with the Society of Trauma Nurses.
Guadalupe, who was among the first in the nation to earn the TCRN when it was launched by BCEN in 2016, used his success to create a path to TCRN certification for dozens of nurses in Shock Trauma and the Emergency Department at the University of Maryland Medical Center. In collaboration with administrators and nurse colleagues, he developed and helped deliver educational resources including a comprehensive TCRN review course whose participants have a greater than 90 percent pass rate on the exam, and removed common barriers to certification by addressing typical test-taking fears and gaining administrative approval to offer the review course for free.

A 26-year nurse who has served as a trauma nurse for the past 12 years, Guadalupe works in the TRU, which is where patients are first brought by ambulance or helicopter for emergency treatment and stabilization. Shock Trauma is one of the highest volume trauma center in the United States with more than 8,000 annual patient encounters. Approximately 96 percent of patients brought to Shock Trauma survive their injuries.
