Double check the bedding and feed. The winter months can be unpredictable.  If a storm unexpectedly closes the roads, do you have sufficient spare feed for the horses?  Just in case, have enough feed and spare bedding to keep your horses fed and comfortable for several weeks.

Spruce up the stable. Again, the cool fall days are an opportune time to place new gravel around the stable, scrub or replace mats in the stalls, and make sure all light bulbs are new before the cold winter days hit.

Examine your horses' winter blankets. Now is the time to check the status of your horses' winter blankets, looking for tears or repairs, or the need for washing or a good stiff brushing,  In colder temperatures clipped horses need the extra protection of a blanket and even unclipped horses should wear a blanket during harsh temperatures or snow.

Check the water supply. Just because horses may drink less water during the fall and winter months does not make their water supply any less important. In colder climates where pipes may freeze, insulate any exposed pipes and water hydrants with insulating tape. You can also purchase a tank heater to ensure your water doesn't freeze. Purchasing a generator may also be a wise decision in case of a power outage.

Purchase a storage cabinet. Put all of your winter supplies—like ice melt, gloves, and heated water buckets—in one place for easy access during inclement weather.

Assisi Animal Health's clinical solutions complete the Circle of Care® — the collaboration of veterinarians and owners in animal health and healing.
